October. As a change
of seasons slowly move in we may find ourselves working harder, stronger,
longer as our year end goals begin to creep up.
Our stress levels rise even higher as we worry about setting our
families up for success for 2015 and most of us respond by overworking
ourselves.
But what about that work/
life balance? Are we canceling out the
positives by focusing too much on a financial goal?
There has been a change in family dynamics over the
last 40 years which in 2003 called upon our Senate to recognize October as
National Work and Family Awareness Month. The goal is to remind employers and businesses
to make forward progress in creating heathy and flexible work environment in
hopes to support work effective programs.
Family dynamic has changed in our nation two ways. To date almost half of America’s work force
is comprised of women who often are the primary care taker of the children but
also older generations who need assistance. But let’s not forget about the men! Men have most recently been working extreme
hours and pushing themselves to the limit to afford a decent lifestyle for their
families while taking cuts in promotions, bonuses, and even accessibility to health
insurance coverage.
These dynamics are
creating a wall between families and quality of life. Especially when the American work force just
keeps asking for more and more and more.
But when is America’s work force going to step up? Can it afford more pay, offer bonuses, and give excellent
health coverage? On average possibly not at this time but what can WE do to
create a consistent, productive work force to grow strong companies?
Let’s take the month of October to breath. Take the month of October to set a work/ life
balance goal for 2015 within your personal and professional life. Encourage your employers to implement a
flexible work environment and research techniques that will positively improve their
employee’s bottom line, bring up rates of retention, decrease absence, and
raise productivity and morale.
You will reap the benefits. Your employer will have a more
consistent work force resulting in a trained staff and growth of product. Your children will have a higher rate of
success in life with the attention and time gathered from you. It is hopeful
this will help turn the tide in America’s stressful focus on making millions into
making the most out of what we have and building a better lifestyle.
So, as a step in the right direction, take this last week in
September to make plans in October! Get out there and take extra time to be with the
ones you love and work so hard for. Let
everyone know that there is a silver lining on the horizon and it involves
working towards a common goal of work and life balance.
