Summertime At Colorados Great Lakes

Summertime At Colorados Great Lakes

Water.  It is simply an amazing element.  We spend all winter skiing down it’s frozen body and get to witness as it slowly starts to melt and bring life to all that surrounds us.  Grand County is changing hats!  Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby are opening up, the Colorado River and all of it’s tributaries are starting to run and it is near time to bag up the skis and bring out the summer toys for some summer fun!
For those who want to enjoy a day on the water without the cost and maintenance of owning their own boat,  consider renting a boat, canoe, or kayak from Grand Lake Marina. This marina not only has delightful, helpful staff but it also houses a delicious coffee shop right on the dock.  A sure way to get your day on the water off to a great start

If you are looking to rent a boat on Shadow Mountain Lake visit Trail Ridge Marina. They will be happy to set you up with a rental.  They are also the only supplier for fuel for Shadow Mountain and Grand Lake so plan accordingly.
Shadow Mountain Lake is only 24 feet deep versus Grand Lake at 265 feet deep and Lake Granby at 221 feet. Being the shallowest of all three lakes it offers warmer water for water skiing and stand up paddle boarding. It will usually offer calm water if you are looking to get out after 10am.  The best part about Shadow Mountain is it’s Osprey nesting grounds located on the finger islands near the south end of the lake.  You will no doubt catch a glimpse of them hunting or feeding their young while listening to their calls.  An experience not to miss!
Lake Granby is wonderful for everything! Anglers love the lake because it is continuously stocked with trout and Kokanee Salmon. Sailors love the 40 miles of shore line. And campers love camping in one of the many bays on the eastern shore. It is perfect for those with a sense of adventure that want to make the most of their day on this beautiful body of water. There are a few different marinas to choose from on Lake Granby. All of them have helpful staff that can set you up with a fishing boat (and maybe some local fishing secrets) , a pontoon boat for the family to enjoy, kayaks for exploring or stand up paddle boards for a little exercise at 8200 feet of elevation.
However you plan on maximizing your water activities this summer don’t forget to fuel up at some of the local’s favorite restaurants.  A few gems include: Makinaw’s at Indian Peak’s Marina, Mustachios on the Lake (next to Indian Peaks Marina) home to the BEST lasagne in the County and the Roadhouse Bar & Grill located on Highway 34 between Shadow Mountain and Lake Granby, don’t miss their trivia night on Wednesdays.
We look forward to seeing you out on the headwaters or behind the scenes helping us protect and preserve our most valuable element.
Wishing you all fair winds and calm waters and big fish!
