One of the many cool things about living in the Fraser Valley is tagging along to your child’s local field trips! Last week, I had the pleasure of joining the 5th graders in Grand County to Monarch Lake. This little gem is nestled around Lake Granby and Rocky Mountain National Park – about 9 miles off US34. I’ve driven back the dirt road before, but not in the fall. It. Was. Stunning. The aspen trees along the way were just starting to change color. There are eagle nests near the water and of course the massive Lake Granby alongside the road. It’s a launch point for many a day hike, or backpacking treks along the Continental Divide Trail. The high lonesome trail to Devil’s Thumb passes right by. We had representatives from the Colorado State Forestry, RMNP, the Hot Sulphur Fire District, and the National Forest Service. We learned about wildlife and life in the backcountry. It’s important to “leave no trace”. We learned about why we ‘clear cut’ trees in the forest and the benefits of wildfire. We learned about life in the lake and all that lives and grows in the water and surrounding areas. It was enlightening even for someone who considers herself quite knowledgeable in the backcountry! I can only imagine the impact it had on the kids. My 5th grader loved to learn about how the wildfire crew combats fire and the importance of clearing trees in the forest. He also was enthralled with the little bugs and leaches we found in the water! All in all, I continue to feel super lucky that I get to live in such a cool mountain town and accompany my kids further into the backcountry on a school sponsored field trip! To think this all started with our little town home investment in Winter Park over 12 years ago…
