The aspen trees are changing colors in Grand County, Colorado! The next couple weekends are good times to come up for a nice fall drive in the Winter Park area. Aspen trees are the first trees to establish in an area that has had the pine trees removed. This is "the bright side" to the pine beetle epidemic... lots more aspens trees and a more vibrant fall in the mountains! There are some really nice drives - one of my favorites is from Winter Park up to Corona Pass (aka Rollins Pass) via Corona Pass Road (aka County Road 80).
Another good one is up to Meadow Creek Reservoir from Tabernash, take the CR 84 up to the reservoir for a nice hike up there so some lunch and for longer drive back with some amazing views of Winter Park Resort and the Continental Divide - take 848 off Forest Service Road 128, then turn at the "T" to continue on 848, then next right onto Forest Service 128 - follow this one all the way into Fraser and it eventually turns into County Road 8. The road gravel isn't packed well, so go slower and you may want a vehicle with higher clearance and all wheel drive.
And if you do go hiking this fall wear bright colors for you and your dogs. It is hunting season and you want to be visible to the hunters. And wildlife activity is high this time of year, be cautious as there have been a lot of bear sightings in town and residential areas and mountain lions seen near Fraser, Winter Park and Tabernash. And of course, keep your distance from moose - they are unpredictable and may charge you! Have fun out there and take photos!
