You’ve booked the family ski vacation, but you yourself don’t ski – what’s the non-skier to do? Luckily for you, Winter Park Resort, located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and just 70 miles west of Denver, offers compelling trails for skiers (even in the backcountry) and other pleasures – taking a soak in the naturally heated pools at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and Spa, showshoeing, cross country skiing, sleigh riding, dog sledding, tubing, bowling, shopping, yoga, massage, movies, cocktails – for you! Here’s some other ideas so you can long for and enjoy your snowy getaway.
Walk through the newly developed Village at the Base of Winter Park when you drop the family off for their downhill adventure. Browse the shops and grab a cup of joe at the Starbucks or locally owned Coffee and Tea in the Balcony House (my personal favorite). Plan a rendezvous spot for a little après ski – Derailer Bar oftentimes has live music from 3-5pm, or there’s new hot spot, Vertical, located in the Village. Have the kiddos with you? Then, no trip is complete until you treat them to ice cream at Goody’s!
For more adventure, there’s a plethora of activities: Pick up a trail map at the Visitor’s Center near Hideaway Park and put on some snowshoes or cross country skis and head a little off the beaten path. Or, Snow Mountain Ranch and Devil’s Thumb Resort both offer groomed trails and rental equipment. Check out the Fraser Tubing Hill for your own kind of downhill adventure, or even take a dog sled ride near town.
There is truly so much more. Upon visiting this wonderful “ski” town, be sure to stop by our office in downtown Winter Park for additional ideas and maps. Sometimes however, we’ve found that the best activity involves a book. While the family is zigzagging down the mountain, you can lean back, wrap your hands around a warm cup of tea and be grateful for the opportunity to do nothing at all.
